Posting is open here for the After Party!

This is a new addition this year to the ficathon.

It's an invitation for for complementary fanworks, to allow people who create fanworks other than fanfic to participate! All ficathon writers have given permission for other artists to create related fanworks for their stories!

Related fanworks could include art, manips, podfic, vids, playlists, crafts, remixes, icons, and pretty much anything that springboards from the posted fic.

Fan artists, crafters and writers of all types are encouraged and urged to take a look at the signup comments here, or the Master List for 2015 and see if they are inspired to create a complementary fanwork of any kind. Writers who have already posted for the fic are totally included in this invitation! Gen works are totally invited too!

The deadline for these complementary works is 7 Sept. 2015.

To announce your complementary work for the After Party, join the J/D ficathon community on DW, and then post to the community with a link to your work. Please include the title and author of the fanfic to which your work is related (and include the link to the fic, if possible). If you need help joining, or prefer to limit your participation to Livejournal, please contact the admins, so that we can announce your fic for you on DW or link to it in the AO3 collection.

Cue the music!

It's time for the After Party!

The amazing Paian has created an umbrella collection on the Archive of Our Own of ALL the Jack/Daniel Ficathons going back to the beginning. Each year of the ficathon has its own subcollection. (She has done hard work of tracking down a link to many of the stories going back to 2004, whether it is housed in the Archive or elsewhere on the Web, and trying to make sure each story written for each ficathon appears in the subcollections. It's an amazing backlist, and she's made much of it easy to find. Wow.)

The main page for this year's 2015 ficathon, Number 12, can be found here.

The overall page for the umbrella collection of all the Jack/Daniel Ficathons is here.

If you are getting ready to post your story to the Archive, you can log in, and then use the link above to the 2015 subcollection as your starting point to post, and the story will automatically be posted in this year's collection.

Or, if you've already posted your story to the Archive, you can use the button at the bottom of your story to add the fic to the 2015 subcollection. (I was playing around with this today and the collection name didn't pop up the way I expected, but I will be confabbing with [personal profile] paian about that -- she knows way more about using the Archive's features than I. I'm pretty sure that the name will appear in a few days, but in the meantime you could type in "jd_ficathon_xii" and that should do it. Without the quote marks I mean.)

(In fact I honestly recommend asking [personal profile] paian if you have questions about finding things in our Ficathon's AO3 collections -- I am still learning how to use them and am a complete noob about search techniques there!)

Some of the stories that have been added to this year's collection are still showing up as unrevealed -- I imagine that will automatically flip to revealed shortly. Again -- stay tuned and I'm fumbling my way through this function, but thank goodness for [personal profile] paian.

I've released all the stories that posted over night from the moderation queue, and all posts today will be visible immediately (I should have enabled immediate posting before I went to bed last night; sorry about that!)

Can't wait to read, and can't wait to post myself! I should be finished on time; it's down to the wire for me.

Today's the day!

Four writers have contacted me and said they would be late. If you are going to be late, please let me know.

Thank you all for writing!

Remember that in addition to the stories, we are inviting people to participat in an After Party. More on that tomorrow.

It's here at last!

Our deadline for posting is in just a few days!

This year's fic should be posted on July 26, any time after midnight the night before.

You can post the entire fic here, behind a cut, or post it anywhere you'd like and link to it here.

Also, don't forget about the collection for this year's fic on Archive of Our Own. I will be posting instructions on how to use that shortly.

For this community on Dreamwidth, moderated posting is turned on, so post early here if you need to.

Please keep the secret of who you're writing for until the deadline. Don't post outside the comm earlier than the 26th.

I have had two writers request extensions, and am happy to do that. Just let me know ASAP.

Just under two weeks shy of the deadline! I have had two writers contact me and let me know they would be late.

How are you doing? What is your panic level?

I have already done one beta for a very efficient writer!

I have to admit I have not started my narrative yet. I have some good ideas and a lot of notes. I should have plenty of time to write this week. So despite my late start my panic level is still Green. Perhaps my head is in the sand.

How are you doing? Do you need anything? Do you have any questions?

Thank you all for participating! It's going to be a great year. I am looking forward to the stories and the After Party!

Our posting deadline for stories is July 26 -- fast approaching!

Please comment on this post if you are looking for a beta, or if you would like to offer your services as a beta! You do not need to be a member of the community to comment here.

(A "beta" or "beta reader" is fandom's term for a volunteer editor or copy editor. The scope of what beta readers do for writers can vary greatly -- be sure not to assume your beta or your writer knows what is wanted or what is on offer. Be specific with each other to avoid misunderstanding or even hurt feelings. And be very clear with each other on the time frames. If you, the writer, need the story back in a few days, say so. If the beta won't be able to get to it for X number of days, say so. It's all about the communication.)

(Also, many writers also do beta work -- if there's a writer whose input you think you would benefit from, it's never out of line to simply ask them if they are available as a beta. They might not have time, but I can almost guarantee they won't mind being asked.)

Happy writing!

(PS... don't forget the After Party -- related fanworks with our stories as inspiration can be posted to or announced in this community starting July 27 through Sept. 7. All the writers have given permission for complementary works to be made.)

I will be away from the internet (mostly) until June 27. You can contact [personal profile] paian if a question about the ficathon should come up during that time.

See you on the flip side! I'm wishing you many fantastic plot bunnies!

Emails with your story assignments for Ficathon XII have gone out. Please email Princessofgeeks at hotmail dot com if you did not receive your assignment. Alternately, you can contact princess via messaging on Dreamwidth.

Rivulet, please contact Princess ASAP!

Please do let me know if you have any questions or issues of any sort regarding your assignment.

Stories are due July 26. You may post your story anywhere you like, but be sure to announce it here on that day. Please do not reveal early. Let the mods know asap if you need to drop out or if you think you will need an extension of the deadline.

***

Remember this year we will be hosting an After Party for any sort of related fanwork that takes a ficathon story as a jumping off point. Those works can be posted anytime between July 27 and Sept. 7. Post them anywhere and announce them on this community.

There will be an Archive of Our Own collection for the fanworks from this year's ficathon and After Party.

We have 20 writers this year! I think this is an enormous number and it makes me very happy.

Signups for the 2015 Jack/Daniel Ficathon are now closed.

We have 19 amazing writers signed up to participate! Hurray! Some new-to-me names and some old and dear friends.

Also, every writer has given permission for complementary fan works to be made with their work and posted during the Ficathon After Party!

The stories will post July 26, and the After Party runs through Sept. 7. Posting for the After Party can occur in the community any time during that period (unlike the ficathon itself, which has a story reveal for the entire slate on the deadline day). We'll post reminders about the After Party as time goes on, but any artist or writer who's interested can take a look at the requested stories and starting thinking of ideas. After Party works could include (and this is not an exhaustive list) podfic, remix fic, banners, 'inspired by' fic, artwork, icons, poetry, manips, crafts -- just any type of related fanwork.

It's going to be a great year.

Timeline:
Sign-Ups Are Open: 17 May - 7 June 2015
Assignments Out: 11 June 2015
Stories Due: 26 July 2015
After Party: Complementary Fanworks (With Fic Author Permission) Due: 7 Sep 2015

So, how does this work?
~ Comment on this post to sign up. All signups will be handled here on Dreamwidth this year. Assignments will be sent out via e-mail. Stories will be due 26 July 2015. However, if you finish early, you can post and we'll leave your story in the moderation queue until the day the ficathon opens.
~ Keep your assignment secret until the deadline. We do suggest you get a beta. Options for getting a beta will be covered in a future post, or you can email or message the admins at any time with these questions.
~ If you have any questions about your assignment, contact [personal profile] princessofgeeks or [personal profile] paian, not the person you're writing for.
~ Stories must be at least 1000 words, but there is no upper limit.
~ Feel free to post either in the comm where you signed up, or somewhere else with a link to your story. More details about posting will be up closer to the deadline.
~ Join your preferred comm on Dreamwidth or Livejournal if you are planning on posting your fic there. Sign-ups will also be accepted from non-members if you are planning on posting only at Archive or Our Own. All members have immediate posting access; posting is moderated so that the fic will all go live the same day.

NEW ADDITION

After Party

This year, we are adding an After Party for complementary fanworks, to allow people who create fanworks other than fanfic to participate! All fanfic writers who sign up for the ficathon will be asked whether they give permission for other artists to create related fanworks, after the stories have posted.

Fan artists of all types are encouraged and urged to take a look at the signup comments and note which fan writers have given permission for complementary works to be posted during the After Party.

The deadline for these complementary works is 7 Sept. 2015.

To announce your complementary work for the After Party, join the J/D ficathon community on DW, and then post to the community with a link to your work. Please include the title and author of the fanfic to which your work is related (and include the link if possible). If you need help joining, or prefer to limit your participation to Livejournal, please contact the admins, so that we can announce your fic for you on DW or link to it in the AO3 collection.

Crossposting Policy for Fic

~ Stories may be hosted on Livejournal, Dreamwidth, Archive of Our Own, or any other website. Stories may be hosted on more than one site, but please provide all links when you announce your fic. We are planning an AO3 collection for the 2015 ficathon; details will be announced as they become available. We will also create a Master List on Dreamwidth for all the stories and all the complementary works in the After Party.
~ You may announce your story anywhere you post.

Defaulting, Dropping, and Extensions:
~ If you drop out without emailing princessofgeeks at hotmail dot com, you will be banned from participation for the following year.
~ If you need more time to finish, simply let us know. There will be a reasonable deadline for late fic, after which a pinch hitter will be recruited to write for your recipient. If something comes up and you can't complete the ficathon, just let us know in advance of the deadline, so your recipient will get a fic from someone!.

For the after party, there is no signup necessary. Post an announcement of your work by the deadline in the DW community. That's it. A master post of complementary fanworks created for the After Party will be posted to the DW community after the deadline.

Sign-Up Form
Here is the sign-up form for fic. You can specify two things that MUST be in your story, and one optional thing that you'd like to be in your story. This year we are adding an IMPORTANT question: Are you willing for someone to create related fanwork(s) for your story for the After Party? You must answer YES or NO to this question. If you leave that out, the mods will hound you for an answer!

Your two requirements should be limited to items from this list:

a prompt, which might be a setting (examples: "an ice planet at night", "a plane trip to D.C.", "the Land of Light"), an object (ex.: "a letter", "a dog", "a new car"), a line of dialogue (ex.: "And then I shot her!"), and so on.
an episode or season: for example, "Beneath the Surface" or "season 5"
a genre: action/adventure, angst, established relationship, first time, humor, hurt/comfort, schmoop, UST, smarm, etc.
a rating: for our purposes, following the MPAA system, so G through NC-17

For your optional request, you can be as specific as you like (e.g., "Jack and Daniel are stranded on an ice planet and Teal'c and Vala come to the rescue, but only after Jack tells Daniel a deep dark secret"), but keep in mind that the writer won't be obligated to include that request in your story.

Restrictions should be things you absolutely don't want in your story. You can specify up to two.

If you only want to fill out the requirement field, that's fine; you don't have to specify optional requests or restrictions. You must answer the question regarding additional fanworks for the After Party.

As for the assignment you'll receive: please specify the maximum rating you'll write. You can write an actual rating here, or just "I'll write anything," "no sex whatsoever," "fade to black only," and so on. You can also list up to three specific things you won't write. If you've only seen up to a certain season, haven't seen earlier seasons, haven't seen the movie, etc., please make sure to note that, so we don't accidentally match you up with a season-specific request you can't write.

Note: If you list more than three things you won't write, only the first three will be weighed; if you list more than two requirements, only the first two will be passed on to your author. (We apologize if that sounds overly restrictive, but please stick to the limits.)

Your comment should look like this:

Name:
LiveJournal/Dreamwidth:
Email:

Two (2) Requirements:
Optional Request:
Restriction #1:
Restriction #2:

Maximum rating you'll write:
You won't write (#1):
You won't write (#2):
You won't write (#3):

Do you give permission for another fan artist to make a work related to your fic for the After Party? (This may include such works as podfic, art, crafts, a remix or other fanfic of your fanfic, etc.): Yes or No?

Will you pinch hit? (This means being willing to be called on to write a fic to a certain prompt in the place of a writer who has defaulted, and to finish by a given deadline.)
Yes or No?

For an example of a finished sign-up form, see the first comment below.

I am sorry to report that [personal profile] sid has injured her arm and can't type hardly at all and is needing to drop out of the ficathon.

She helped so much already as a mod! Thank you, sid, and take care of yourself.

This means we need a pinch hitter for her assignment:

"Name: Cassie
LiveJournal/Dreamwidth/AO3: badfalcon

Two (2) Requirements: pre-season 8. a jealous, posessive Jack reminding everyone (including Daniel) who he belongs to
Optional Request: I will never turn down some kinky fun
Restriction #1: fisting"

I would like to open the floor for volunteers to take this prompt, and if I don't get any volunteers I'll be tapping some of you who said you could pinch hit on the shoulder very soon.

Badfalcon, thank you for your patience!

So, who would like to pinch hit?

Thank you to all the "late" authors who have checked in to let me know your status.

Looks like everyone who has promised to write should be able to post by mid-September at the latest, and we won't be needing a pinch-hitter. If that should change, please let me know asap.

Do please keep in touch, all you writers.

I am chugging along myself. Sigh. It does happen--being late. I'm in good shape but it's just going a lot slower than I am used to.

In general, it's great to see so much participation and so many readers and commenters. Hurray!

The Jack/Daniel Ficathons have always been fic exchanges that involve the idea of a gift. Participants agree to write a fic for someone. Participants get a fic written just for them, to their specifications.

When someone gives you a gift, you at the very least say "thank you."

If you participated in this ficathon, and someone writes you a fic, please thank your writer. Thank them even if you dropped out, even if you submitted late, even if you don't like the story they wrote for you very much.

A simple "thank you" to your writer is extremely important.

And if you choose to go beyond that, and give impressions of how the fic made you feel, or pick out particular expressions or turns of phrase or characterizations or creative twists that really stood out to you….. Well. Your writer will be VERY VERY HAPPY.

Thank you to everyone who participated this year. Wow.

WE DID IT. WE ARE DOING IT.

Hurray!

FYI to the other admins, here and on LJ… I will be busy from USA time 6 am to late in the afternoon, so I won't be able to check the moderation queue until later Thursday afternoon, USA time. If one of you guys is available to do so, feel free!

I have received nearly half a dozen requests for extensions, some of only a few days; just FYI.

I will also start on a master list Friday or Saturday, unless someone else does it first. And I am also planning to do a post on using the AO3 Collection for this year's ficathon, again, unless someone else posts here about that first.

Thank you to everyone who has helped and/or participated in this year's ficathon. I am so excited to read the stories.

We're getting close to our story deadline of August 14! Hurray!

Remember you can post your story to any of the journal communities, or to AO3, and then link here, or you can post your story here. There's also a story collection for this year (and also all previous years of the ficathon) at AO3.

Let me know if any of you needs more time to write. I've already heard from one person who will be needing an extension.

Remember if you want to ask for a beta, or offer your services as one, you can comment on this post.

My story is going well but slowly. I'll probaby be right down to the wire.

How are you all doing?

It's felt like a huge accomplishment to launch this year's ficathon, and I'm grateful just to be a part of doing that.

But in past years the organizers found ways to involve visual artists, and other fan creators who don't necessarily want to write a fic.

I am all for this, but didn't really give it much thought this year.

But it's something I want to include next year. Because there will DEFINITELY be a next year! :D

Any thoughts on how this would work? People who have participated in ficathons that also bring in artists, etc.?

Ideas?

"Beta readers", also known as editors, are the unsung heroes of fanfiction fandom.

If you would like to offer your services as a beta for the Jack/Daniel Ficathon 2014, comment on this post with that info.

If you are looking for a beta for your story, comment on this post with that info.

If you are writing for the ficathon and have a beta you normally use, more power to you!

If you are working with a certain beta for the first time, it's essential to clarify what the writer is expecting and what the beta feels qualified to offer. It's a terrible and deflating experience to have a mismatch between beta and writer, and communication upfront is essential to avoid misunderstandings.

For example, if the writer is sending the beta an unfinished first draft and simply wants to know, "Is this working? Does this seem plausible so far?", the beta should not do a full copy-edit with grammar and punctuation and dialect corrections. That is not what the writer wants or needs and will be a waste of time at that point.

Clarifying what is wanted and needed on both sides is essential.

Feel free, you betas (who are almost always also writers! But not always!) to post in your own space about how you conduct your editing process, and give us a link here.

Happy writing! We're less than a month away now; woo hoo. My panic level is .5, I am happy to say. What a relief.
